Why a full gearbox flush beats a plain ATF change - benefits and when to book.
In a modern automatic transmission the ATF fluid doesn't just lubricate: it transmits torque, cools components, and hydraulically controls the clutches. Over the kilometres it oxidises and leaves deposits that a simple oil change cannot remove.
Oil change vs. gearbox flush
A conventional drain-and-fill replaces only around 40-60% of the fluid - the rest, along with any contamination, stays in the torque converter and hydraulic passages. A gearbox flush uses a dedicated machine hooked into the circuit and replaces up to 95-100% of the ATF.
Benefits
- ▸Smoother, more responsive gear shifts
- ▸Less jerking and vibration
- ▸Lower operating temperatures
- ▸Longer transmission life
When to do it
As preventive maintenance every 60,000-80,000 km, or earlier if you notice jerking, delayed shifts, or a burnt smell. Always with ATF that matches the manufacturer's specification.
Where to book in the Zurich area
A gearbox flush needs the dedicated machine, the correct ATF and proper diagnostics. Punto Hispano in Seuzach - between Winterthur and Zurich - takes pre-opening bookings.
FAQ
Frequent questions about gearbox flushing
What exactly is a gearbox flush (Getriebespülung)?
A gearbox flush uses a dedicated machine to exchange the full ATF volume in an automatic transmission under pressure - including torque converter, cooler and lines. A basic ATF drain only replaces about half of the fluid sitting in the pan.
↑ Back to questionsHow is a flush different from a normal ATF change?
A basic change leaves old fluid in the converter and cooler, so new and old ATF mix. A flush replaces close to 100 % of the fluid and removes wear particles and burnt additives, so the gearbox shifts noticeably smoother.
↑ Back to questionsWhen should a gearbox flush be done?
As a guideline every 60,000-80,000 km, or when symptoms appear: harsh shifts, jerking, delayed engagement, or a burnt smell from the ATF. Towing, city traffic and short trips shorten the interval.
↑ Back to questionsDoes a flush make sense on a high-mileage gearbox?
For very high mileage (>200,000 km) with fluid never changed, we decide case by case after diagnosis. On worn transmissions a flush can amplify symptoms, so we first check fluid condition and fault memory.
↑ Back to questionsWhich ATF fluid do you use?
Only OEM-approved ATF (e.g. specific Dexron, Mercon, MB, VW or ZF releases). Using the wrong fluid can damage clutches, torque converter and internal electronics.
↑ Back to questionsHow long does the service take and what does it cost?
The flush itself typically takes 1-2 hours. Price depends on fluid volume, ATF specification, filter and pan gasket. You receive a transparent quote before we start.
↑ Back to questionsCan I pre-book a gearbox flush in Seuzach?
Yes. Punto Hispano accepts pre-bookings; the workshop is operational from 5 September 2026. Reserve via the booking or contact form.
